SciLinks - a website linking websites, activities, news about a common topic from the US National Science Teachers Association
ScienceDaily - great resource for news about science topics
5 E Approach to Science Inquiry Teaching
A Private Universe - video of a classroom showing why inquiry is important
National Institutes of Health Curriculum - a variety of topics in biology and health
Scale and Technology - materials from the lesson above called "Using Technology to Study Cellular and Molecular Biology" and additional lessons using images
DNA to Protein - Using online databases -
BLAST: Student handouts and teacher guides
BLAST Online Database of nucleotide sequences
Genetic Home Reference Tool - online database of genes and their functions; both healthy and with genetic changes
DNA Beads - an introductory activity to the structure of DNA. Give one phrase at a time to students. Have them build a model based on the information using beads that snap together. As more information is given to them, they can revise their models. Then go to HHMI video clips for the story of DNA's structural discovery.
DNA Extraction - an easy lab to extract DNA from fruit
Testable Questions - example of developing a criteria for good testable questions using observations of pillbugs (rolypoly bugs). Students observe bugs (words, drawings), then develop questions. Share all questions with whole class and go through them finding the best testable questions. Decide why a question is good, driving the discussion towards the 5 criteria.
Evolution
Whale Evolution - Student handouts and teacher guide
HHMI - Howard Hughes Medical Institute - a great resource for biology. The educational section is called BioInteractive
Mice in the desert - video, activity
Sickle Cell and malaria - video, activity
Lizards - great example of evolution happening now - video
Homeostasis Stories - Simulation of homeostasis gone wrong
Critter Project - After the evolution unit, students create a critter based on a habitat. They have to then incorporate an environmental change using evolution principles. Students revisit their critter after each unit, applying the principles from each unit, for the rest of the year.
Master Copies of materials for the Earth Structure lessons - There are also a couple of folders with other materials. I especially like the lesson "TWD_Exploring_Everest_Topography.pdf" because students create a topo map of a mountain and then have to create 3D model from the map.
Online database of volcanos and earthquakes - NOAA (good as of 7/2017); OpenQuake (free to sign up, plots earthquakes)
Everest IMAX film from 1998 - Trailer - The Spanish climber Araceli Segarra is featured in this film. Araceli is the first Spanish women to climb to the summit of Mt Everest.
MicroObservatory - an online telescope where you can request images to be taken and you get the image through email. Lessons and activities for students can be found under the "Projects and Activities" tab.
Online image processor - MicroObservatory's JS9 --- Handout (doc or pdf) for JS9 Introduction Lesson --- Images for JS9 Introduction lesson --- Worksheet for students to color a picture (doc or pdf)
TerraForma Creative Connection Card Questions --- Terra Forma website
Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) -- Earth Science Picture of the Day (EPOD)
Astrobites - Summaries of scientific articles; Easy to read; Searchable
Zooniverse - A variety of projects you can get involved with; There is a educator section with a lot of helpful ideas about how to use it with students
Scistarter - site that explains citizen science projects; A lot information
Guest speaker Kate Modrzejewski's ppt on accommodations for special needs students
Special Needs Students - Definitions, Accommodations, Motivation
Aurasma - a website and an app. Students use the website to upload a picture they take. They create a text, an audio or a video that is related to the picture. The website links their image with their other file. The app on their phone, tablet, etc will let you see the two things.
